A chef is one of the more illustrious persons in the hospitality industry. Being a top chef is a top priority for many in hospitality jobs. A top chef is admired and renowned. Some big names command celebrity status and the money that comes with it. Chefs have been known to hobnob with top political and Hollywood personalities and even give a restaurant a big name. Indeed, some restaurants can not be if the resident chief is no longer in place. Being a top chef however, comes by being determined and working hard.
To succeed at being a chef as well as any other restaurant jobs, you have to be creative. There are so many recipes to experiment with. A top chef comes out as the guy with an imaginative flair for putting all tidbits together to make a great meal. For those starting out, it is a good idea to pick a niche in which to specialize. Take seafood for example. If you excel in this niche, you become the chef to go to for those who have a taste for great seafood, or bush meat or vegetarian foods.
There are few other hospitality careers that need a managerial mindset than a chef’s job. As the head of the kitchen, the chef must have organizational and coordination skills. In a large restaurant, the kitchen staff can run into hundreds and the chef needs to be on top of issues. It is not uncommon for a chef to take a management course to complement kitchen skills.
